Random Digit Dialling (RDD)
At the core of the market research industry is our expansive and highly representative RDD landline and mobile phone number generation.
The RDD process generates phone numbers that are as representative of the population as possible and that have a high probability of being ‘live’ and in-use by Australians.
We cross-check our extensive database of 15 million numbers against the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) list of blocked phone numbers.
RDD Mobiles
While we are not able to target specific locations for RDD mobiles (as mobiles are quite literally mobile) we have techniques for approximating the age of the person operating the mobile.
RDD Landlines
We use our understanding of the geographic distribution of landlines within Australia to target specific localities with our RDD process.
We can provide RDD Landlines that are representative of the different Metropolitan to non-Metropolitan population divides within each state or territory within Australia.
Our localised RDD samples are highly advanced.
We can produce localised RDD samples, focused on generating numbers that have a high probability of belonging to smaller areas. For example:
- Local government areas
- State and Federal electorates
- Custom boundaries

SAMPLES
The integrity of our samples is of the utmost importance.
Our RDD samples are generated based on the national numbering plan of Australia.
SAMPLING FRAME – The sampling frame consists of every single possible number combination.
GENERATION OF RAW RDD SAMPLE – The raw RDD sample is created based on client specifications:
- Nationally Representative
- Localized
- Customised
We can exclude numbers, or work with you to produce custom exclusion criteria that meet your needs.
NUMBER VALIDATION – We “ping” the RDD numbers to check the carrier and that they are live, so as you don’t waste time trying to connect to dead or disconnected numbers. We continually check the rate of disconnected numbers, the carrier distribution of the live numbers, the percentage overlap of the RDD sample with our list numbers in addition to various other tests to ensure that every sample is of high quality.
NUMBERS SCREENING – We screen all numbers from the database and then remove the disconnected numbers, known business numbers, and any blacklisted numbers from the sample. Any time a contact person asks any of our clients to remove their number from future research, we “blacklist” that person’s number and ensure it is never sent to any of our clients either as a list number or as an RDD number.
POST-PROCESSING – Post-processing involves adding necessary strata data and appending any other requested data to the sample. In the case or RDD Mobiles, we expect 33% of the sample to match our list database. In the case of landlines, we expect 77% of an RDD sample to match records in our database. We can append data about these list matches for you within the sample, so you’ll have the age, gender and location data for a sizeable portion of your RDD sample if required.
