Not all samples are equal

Last week we had one of those reminders.

A client — let’s call them Alex – emailed.

Alex asked: Hi SamplePages. Can I please get a sample of these suburbs for a MetroTunnel poll.

Which was when we realised Alex, our long-term client and quasi friend, did not know about that we could sample from a provided customised map.

So, we picked up the phone: ‘Alex, we recommend that you create a customisable map’.

We then helped Alex to create a customisable map for residents living along the proposed new railway line. And we aided Alex to produce a KML file that was representative of this.

The problem with Alex’s sample was this. A list of suburbs would be too general for what Alex needed. Because when it comes to something like a new train line – how close you are to it, matters.

Sampling from customised mapping boundaries ensures you are capturing the unique target audience for your prospective business or research.

How to create a customised map for sampling

Map Step 1 : Access google maps (https://www.google.com/maps)

Map Step 2: Click ‘Your places’ on the left-hand side menu dropdown -> Maps -> Create

Map Step 3: Use the search toolbar to reach your desired location and use the drawing tool (circled in red) to draw your custom boundaries.

Map Step 4: Name your custom map boundary.

Map Step 6: Use the 3 dots (circled in red) and select ‘Export to KML/KMZ’.
